NZ Grass Develops Immunity To Glyphosate Herbicide Round Up

Environment

Agricultural Chemicals and the use of Toxic Herbicides and Pesticides In New Zealand:

This post was first published in 2012 on this website and has just been restored.

New Zealand’s TV1 reported on 13th December 2012 that a rye grass grown in the South Island has developed a resistance to the glyphosate weedkillers. Monsanto’s RoundUp weedkiller is one such weedkiller which contains glyphosate.

Good to bring this herbicide into the spot-light again, More knowledge about glyphosate and its harmful effects might cause people to think twice about using it. WHO have declared glyphosate a probable cancer risk since first publishing this article.

Merrilyn’s new book is out on Amazon:

RoundUp is the one most commonly used glyphosate weedkiller in New Zealand.

These glyphosate chemicals are very toxic things, and cause many illnesses, yet RoundUp is poured around with gay abandon all over the place, as if it was the most harmless thing on earth. It is commonly used by farmers, by grape-growers, kiwi-fruit growers and orchardists, as well as by councils both small and large, in and around our parks and on the grass verges about the towns. Farmers, I know, all seem to relish using RoundUp and the other glyphosate brands, around their houses, and about their farms. Orchardists regularly spray the stuff in between the rows of fruit trees, so they don’t have to bother about weeding anymore.

According to a report which came out in the Scientific American, 23rd June 2009, RoundUp contains inert chemicals which are thought to be more dangerous than the glyphosate itself. The chemicals found in RoundUp and other brands of glyphosate weedkillers have been found to cause the death of human cells, especially the cells of the placenta, the embryo, and the umbilical cord. These findings make RoundUp and the other glyphosate weedkillers extremely risky for expectant mothers, or for those who are contemplating bringing a child into the world.

The solvents which are added to RoundUp, and other such weedkillers, magnify the toxic effect to humans of the main compound, the glyphosate. Research done in 2009 showed that this was the case, and that even in much diluted form other that the potencies used by farmers and orchardists, the residual effect of RoundUp chemicals on food was enough to cause cell damage and even death. One inert ingredient, polyethoxylated tallowamine, known as POEA, was found to be especially harmful to the embryo, the umbilical cord, and the placenta.

The University of Caen in France reported that “This clearly confirms that the [inert ingredients] in RoundUp formulations are not inert……Moreover, the proprietary mixtures available on the market could cause cell damage and even death at the residual levels”…” such as those found on RoundUp treated crops like soybeans, alfalfa, lawns and gardens”, as Crystal Gammon writes in her article for the ‘Scientific American’.

I believe that the mysterious death of pockets of our fabulous KAURI trees could be due to the use of RoundUp or other glyphosate chemicals being used on the walking tracks which run near these trees. It has been proven that bee colony collapse disorder is due to the use of agricultural chemicals: Nicotinoid pesticides, even in such small minute, such as would be considered a homeopathic dose, have caused bees to succumb to the virus which causes bee colony collapse disorder. So Kauri trees might just be as vulnerable to RoundUp and related chemicals as the bees are to these things. Humans are certainly just as vulnerable, but the danger of their use to humans is overlooked whilst the chemical and drug companies continue to reap in those massive profits.

And to all you sceptics who say that ‘there is nothing in homeopathy which works’ – the illustration of the bees which became sick after being exposed to such minute amounts of nicotinoid toxins which could not be detected by any scientific equipment, proves the point that even microscopic amounts of chemicals or herbal substances, such as those amounts used in homeopathic medicine, can have a profound effect on living creatures.

Humans are allowed to continue getting sick from such chemicals as RoundUp, but as soon as the agriculture industry, or the honey-making industry is affected, resulting in less profits for the chemical and drug companies as well as the farmer, then the authorities sit up and listen.

The glyphosate chemicals, including RoundUp, are making giant profits for the chemical companies. Which is why they are dead keen to present this weedkiller as a ‘safe’ herbicide, when the thing is actually not safe at all.

And there you go – Grasses are developing an immunity to it anyway.

Weight Loss Research Shows Thunder God Vine Slows Appetite

Natural Remedies

Harvard Medical School has just published a paper in the science journal ‘Cell’ on 20th May, 2015 which indicates the Chinese herb ‘Thunder God Vine’ could be very promising for curing obesity.

Radio New Zealand gave us a report on the new findings today, Saturday 23 May, 2015, just before 1PM.

With the numbers of obesity growing throughout the world now – over a third of the population is supposed to come under the obese category – the need to find a non-toxic and effective remedy for weight loss is becoming urgent.

A selection of herbal remedies, known to be helpful in weight loss, were used in the recent Harvard studies:  The one which came top of the list for its effectiveness was the Thunder God Vine.  It has the remarkable capacity to slow down the appetite because of a compound called Leptin.

Leptin warns the brain that you have had enough to eat. People who are deficient in Leptin eat too much because they still feel hungry, even after eating a full meal.

This ancient herb, which is native to China, Korea and Japan, has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries.

Research on mice at Harvard has proved that Leptin in the Thunder God Vine reduced appetite, causing weight loss.  A reduced food intake resulted in a 45% weight loss over several weeks of taking the herb each day.

And there have been no toxic effects observed in the use of the herb.

The Leptin within the Thunder God Vine looks to be very promising for curing obesity:  It has the capacity to awaken the appetite centre in the brain, so that instead of ignoring those signals to stop eating, when you already have a full tummy, the brain will have the right response.  With the help of Leptin from the Thunder God, you should feel full after a meal, and not want to overeat.

Of course, the herb will not be enough on its own in maintaining a healthy body.  Adequate exercise must be taken.

Food choices should still be sensible ones, with sugary foods, wheat flour breads and cakes all omitted from the diet Yeast products should be avoided too.

It is really best to avoid dairy foods as well, and use soya milk instead of dairy milk. Remember that the pastures where dairy cows graze have been sprayed with many chemicals, and these chemicals get absorbed in concentration in the cow’s milk.  Some of these chemicals can cause cancer and other health problems, such as obesity and depression. See the paragraph on herbicides and pesticides below.

Another negative aspect of dairy milk is that it is spoilt for human consumption by pasteurization. Pasteurized milk is difficult to digest properly, and many people  have a problem with it.  Dairy milk, and especially pasteurized dairy milk, causes mucous to form in the intestines, and this milk makes a home for intestinal parasites, or worms.

If the milk is not digested properly, then it causes bloating in the bowel, which causes the stomach to swell.  Wheat products can do the same thing.  Wheat bread is especially bad when it is made with yeast, as the yeast tends to continue fermenting in the intestines.

Food additives in the way of colourings, preservatives and flavourings, are a must to avoid.  Many of these chemicals have very damaging effects on the health, as well as the appetite.

Another thing to be careful to avoid is herbicides and pesticides, as these can interfere with the body and brain functions in many ways which are damaging to health.  The glyphosphate weedkiller such as RoundUp is very bad, and I believe that the world-wide use of this is one major cause of obesity.  It damages the natural intestinal flora, killing off the beneficial bacteria and increasing others, such as candida albicans, which causes yeast infections.

Basically, RoundUp and many other agricultural chemicals alter the balance of organisms in the bowel.  When candida gets out of control, it means you do not digest your food properly, your immune system is weakened, and you are likely to fall sick.  Deficiencies in nutrients can arise, which can lead you to be continually hungry.

When these chemicals are sprayed continually around your environment, then you really are in trouble.

The other thing that some of these herbicides and pesticides do is alter the hormonal secretions:  The pineal and pituitary glands, I find, are noticeably affected.  These centres seem to become inflamed and disconnected from the brain after exposure to weed-killer such as glyphosphate-containing RoundUp.  These important energy centres can get out of control, doing their own thing regardless of what the body needs. The disturbances in their normal functioning can cause a feeling of alienation from the world, as well as depression and appetite disturbances.

Last, but not least, meditation and yoga can help enormously to de-stress the body and brain.  Yoga Nidra, an ancient practice of relaxation, is a wonderful technique which can relax the brain,  allowing you to reprogramme yourself, devoid of the emotional clutter which prevents you from really enjoying your life.

Natural Remedies

Culpeper says of Sage that it ’causes the hair to become black’.

Garden sage has many therapeutic uses.

In the garden, its flowers provide medicine and nectar for the bees, as well as a herbal tonic to the neighbouring plants.

It is well-known as an aid to oral hygiene.  It has strong antiseptic qualities and is supposed to whiten tooth enamel.

Sage is still used today in some tooth-pastes.  It is reputedly one effective remedy for bleeding gums,  and improving gum health:  The crushed fresh leaves are massaged several times a day onto the gums and teeth.

The tea is gargled to relieve sore throats, colds and flu,  and ulcers in the mouth.

It can be effective to reduce fevers, and has been used in the past for thyphoid fever. (see ‘Herbal Remedies  and Homeopathy’ published by Geddes and Grosset.)

It is a valuable nerve medicine, and is a useful stomach remedy for improving a weak appetite.

Natural Herbal Hair Dye and Tonic:  Sage can help restore healthy hair and improve the colour.

Strong sage tea encourages hair growth and darkens the hair, if it is used on a regular basis. Many herbalists describe it in their writings:  see John Heinerman’s ‘Encyclopedia of Fruits Vegetables and Herbs’.

Rosemary is another wonderful herb which can help hair growth, but it does not have such a darkening effect on the hair, as sage does.

Recipe For Sage Hair Dye:  Here is a simple, natural hair dye and tonic which you can try.  It is perfectly safe to use, as it does not contain any harmful additives such as you might find in commercial dyes for darkening the hair.

Take two cups of fresh sage leaves and put into a stainless steel saucepan.

Add one cup of dry black tea leaves

Add half a cup of cider vinegar and eight cups of water.

Simmer very gently, with no lid, for one hour on a very low heat.  You should have around half the original quantity of liquid left at the end of an hour.  If you need to add a little more water, make sure you do so well before you finish simmering the brew.  If you add more water at the end of the simmering, then your mixture will not keep so well.

Take off the heat after an hour of simmering.  Set aside to cool.

Once your sage mixture has cooled properly, strain it off.

To the liquid remaining add the same amount of vodka.

Put into a bottle with a screw-top lid and store in a cool place.

Massage around a tablespoonful of the sage infusion into the hair each day.  Use more or less, depending on how much hair you need to cover.

Massage the sage tonic well into the roots of the hair as well, so that it feeds the scalp and hair follicles.  Massaging the scalp with the sage tonic will help the hair to grow again.

The oils in the sage leaves will put a natural shine to the hair.

Once the hair is sufficiently darkened, which may take several weeks, you can reduce the amount of applications each week.  Once or twice a week may be enough to maintain the darker colour.

Sage is really very good for the hair in so many ways.

Alternative Sage Tonic Without Alcohol:  You could make up your sage tea without the alcohol if you wish.  Only, remember that your mixture will not keep for longer than a week, and it must be kept in the fridge.  You could make up a lesser amount, enough to last a week, and then make up a fresh brew of tea for the following week.

Antibiotic Medicine Harmed By Herbicides Including RoundUp

Toxic Chemicals Weaken Antibiotic Medicine As Well As Homeopathic Medicine

It was not surprising to hear on Radio New Zealand news just before Easter, that scientists have found that the efficacy of antibiotics is dramatically reduced by herbicides such as the glyphosphate-containing RoundUp weedkiller.

RoundUp and other toxic herbicides and pesticides, I find, have a dramatic effect on digestion, because they interfere with the natural digestive flora and enzymes in the body.

Candida infections, and bladder and kidney inflammations can result after being exposed to toxic chemicals which kill off the beneficial bacteria within the body, and change its natural, healthy,  pH level.

Other chemicals such as those found in printing inks and clothing dyes, and arsenic-treated timber, can also have a damaging effect on the health for the same reason.

It is a logical conclusion to draw, then, that if the natural and beneficial organisms living in the body’s digestive system can be killed off by toxic chemicals such as weedkiller and pesticides, that the organisms present within antibiotic medicines are likely to be affected too.

Many commonly used drugs are also likely to behave differently on the body when the digestive system is not functioning properly, as is the case when the useful digestive flora is damaged because of exposure to herbicides such as glyphosphates and neonicotinoid poisons or other harmful chemicals.

The efficacy of herbal medicines and homeopathy is also affected when a person has been exposed to chemical poisons such as weedkillers and pesticides.  Homeopathic preparations themselves are very sensitive to such poisons, and can be weakened if left in an area which has been made toxic for some reason.  People who use toxic chemicals, or even antibiotics and other pharmaceutical products, on a regular basis will find that Homeopathic medicines are not as effective as they are said to be, because of the negating effect of stronger chemicals.

It is now well known that antibiotics are losing their strength as disease-combatting medicines, because bacteria are becoming resistant to them.

And now it has been proven that RoundUp and other herbicides and pesticides are also diminishing the effect of antibiotics in curing disease.

Plenty of reasons, then, for governments world-wide to curb the free and irresponsible use of herbicides and pesticides.  They are not necessary for healthy agriculture:  We have survived thousand of years without these modern chemicals which are having an adverse effect on our environment and good health.

And nor is it necessary to use antibiotics and modern drugs.  They do have a purpose, of course, but often a simple herbal or homeopathic remedy will do just as well, or better, without the unwanted side effects you can expect from many modern drugs.

There are many good reasons to consider natural methods of farming and orcharding, as well as the use of Homeopathic remedies, Vitamin C therapy, Vitamin A therapy, and herbal medicine as alternatives to using vaccination antibiotics and other potentially harmful medicines.

Natural Remedies and Homeopathic Alternatives to Antibiotics:

Of course you need to consult your doctor if you or your child are suffering some infection.  Consult a registered homeopath for advice on what to use as an alternative to vaccination or immunization.  It is important to use just the right remedy for an illness, or for prevention.  So do consult an expert.

Here are some suggestions for you to discuss with your doctor or naturopath or homeopath.

Homeopathic Urtica Urens is a reputable medicine for kidney and bladder infections, especially if it is combined with the age-old remedy of drinking plenty of cooled, boiled water throughout the day.

Homeopathic Belladonna is used as a preventative for Scarlet Fever, or to treat it.

Homeopathic Ledum can be used as a preventative for Tetanus, or to use after an injury on farms or where horses have been kept.

Homeopathic Arsen Alb is excellent as a flu prevention, or to minimize the effects of flu if flu is already present.  There is no risk involved with using Arsen Alb for flu prevention, whereas the flu vaccination can be a risky thing.

Vitamin C in megadoses is a proven remedy to reverse illness. Swine flu, cancers of many kinds, and many other conditions of ill-health respond to Vitamin C therapy.  2000mg of non-acidic  vitamin c taken every hour or two will be quick to reduce flu symptoms in an adult.  Reduce the dose for a child.

Bayer Says Stop Campaign To Save Bees Or We Will Sue

Environment Crisis: Bees Are Dying By The Millions

SumOfUs, who are working hard to save the bees, have been threatened by Bayer because of their campaign to stop the use of harmful-to-bees pesticides.

Bayer is already on the warpath of the European Commission, who have banned some insecticides because of the evidence which shows them to be harmful to bees.

Bayer want the European Commission’s ruling overturned so that they can continue right on with making and selling and profitting from their evil toxic sprays.  I wrote about Bayer’s incredibly irresponsible response to the EC’s ruling on:

Bee-Killing Insecticides Banned In Europe, But Now Bayer Sues

Heading for a Major Environmental Disaster:  We need bees and pollinating insects to fertilize our crops, orchards and gardens.  Without enough of these pollinators there will be world-wide famine and we will all starve.

Many insecticides and herbicides currently on the market are killing bees by the millions, as well as many other pollinating insects.

Alexis Hope wrote me last week:  ‘The short haired bumble bee in NZ has gone extinct in the UK where it was originally imported from. They’re trying to reintroduce it from NZ back to the UK.
There are other varieties which have died out that can’t be reintroduced. Tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers (that whole night shade family of veg) are all pollinated by bumble bees from buzz polination. Something honey bees can’t do.’

Neonicotinoid insecticides are mainly to blame for the rapid decline in bee numbers across Europe, America and New Zealand.

Of course, there are other factors involved in the phenomenon of a declining bee population, such as lack of diversity in agriculture, and climate change, but there is plenty of evidence to show that neonicotinoids really do affect bees in a devastating way.  Read my post on Bee Colony Collapse Disorder from way back in 2011:

Bee Colony Collapse Disorder

Nicotinoid Insecticides Kill Bees And Harm Humans

The trouble is that these multinational corporations, which manufacture the harmful agricultural chemicals used the world over, do not wish to stop profiting from the sale of their harmful chemicals.  It is a multi-billion dollar industry.

So these big greedy companies are fighting all the way to keep their products on the market.

Save The Bee campaigners SumOfUs have received a letter from Bayer which threatens legal action unless SumOfUs stop their campaign to save the bees.  SumOfUs desperately need funds to help fight the legal battle against ‘the deep-pocketed Bayer’ on the issue of their campaign to protect the bees.

See if you can donate a little.  SumOfUs, who have influence because of their international following and their website ‘voice’, are fighting this legal battle for the rest of us.  If we all give just $5 or $10, we are doing our bit to help gain a good result. Go to SumOfUs website

us@sumofus.org and search for Bees:SumOfUs sued

Read about  New Zealand parliament’s concerns over bee welfare and their suggested moratorium on the use of neonicotinoid poisons .  Thankyou Alexis for posting me this link:

Alexis wrote me:

‘While the Nats go to war, looks like the Greens are trying to stop the use of neonicotinoids in NZ.’

Sue Kedgley respectfully requests
“Stop the use of pesticides that are implicated in bee deaths until an ERMA reassessment finds that they do not pose a risk to bee health.”
“It is argued that, unlike older pesticides that evaporate or disperse shortly after application, neonicotinoids incorporate themselves into the plant’s tissues and emits toxins from its roots, leaves, stems, pollen, and nectar.”

Organic USA Farmers Sue Monsanto For Contamination Of Crops

Monsanto Against Sustainable Agriculture.

Monsanto is the biggest corporation of all those corrupt organizations who are attempting to gain control of our food supply for their own profit.

The latest court case is happening right now, with USA farmers sueing Monsanto for contamination of their wheat crops.

A March against Monsanto is planned by NYC Free Schools and Food Justice in USA for the 23rd May, 2015.  The headline reads:

‘They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.’  See the links below for details.

http://www.march-against-monsanto.com/

https://www.facebook.com/events/379571882141135/permalink/688183531279967/

Monsanto is well-known for its litigious actions: Since 1997, Monsanto have taken 145 people to court over patent infringement, and it has not lost a case yet.

DuPont, the next biggest GM seed producing company after Monsanto, is also on the war-path.  It is been reported that DuPont plans to employ ex-policemen to check on farmers to investigate whether there is any of their GM seed on their properties.

In 2011, a group of around 50 American organic farmers got together to preemptively sue Monsanto before Monsanto could sue them for rogue Monsanto seed found in their fields.

If Monsanto were being reasonable and fair, they would understand that the last thing an organic farmer would want in his paddock is one of Monsanto’s genetically-modified plants, and so they would not ever sue an organic farmer.

Basically, anyone who is not buying these big companies’ genetically modified seed is at risk of attack by the seed giants.

There is money to be made for Monsanto in sueing people, and every time they squash a small farmer, they gain ascendancy in the battle to own and control the world’s food supply.

The organic farmers lost their case against Monsanto in 2011, and again in 2013.  But now, in 2015, a burgeoning group of almost 300,000 organic farmers are once more taking Monsanto to court for contamination of their crops.

Organic famers are not just worried that they might be sued by Monsanto if a trace of GM seed shows up in the farmer’s paddock:

Organic farmers are also concerned that heirloom seed is being genetically changed by Monsanto’s GMO seeds.  Heritage canola seed, which produces the world’s canola oil, has become near-extinct because of contamination by Monsanto’s ‘RoundUp Ready’ variety of canola seed.

All plant varieties are at risk from being genetically changed by Monsanto’s GMO seeds, if Monsanto seed of the same plant type is growing in the area.

Monsanto’s genetically modified seed is becoming dominant, as it invades crops of traditional seeds, changing  seeds forever, and this is putting our food chain at risk.

It was hoped that this lawsuit might take a spoke out of the predatorial giant Monsanto wheel.  Disappointing that  just this week, on Monday 26th January, 2015, the Supreme Court has ruled in favour of Monsanto in yet another case against Monsanto.

But this is not the end of the battle by organic farmers against the threat of Biotech giant Monsanto’s right to sue if they find any of their genetically modified and patented seeds in an organic farmer’s field.

Monsanto currently have the law on their side, which means they have the right to sue for patent infingement against any farmer if their seed is found without the farmer having paid for the patented seed.  This law applies even when the seed has arrived in a field quite naturally, via wind or cross-pollination by insects.

How unjust is that? The law supports this Mafia of agriculture, no matter what.  ‘Pay your dues, or look out. We will kick your arse.’  This is the underlying message given by Monsanto and the other seed giants such as DuPont.

To date, Monsanto have successfully sued to the tune of 23 million dollars against farmers who, they say, have used their patented seed without paying for it.

In March, 2011, a group of 50 farmers sought a legal decision to support them in prohibiting Monsanto from sueing them if Monsanto seeds showed up in their farms.  They lost.  The court decided that the assurance from Monsanto held good – that they would not sue if only small amounts of their product was found on any farm.  This assurance is on their website.  The judge ruled this Monday the 26th January, 2015, that the former ruling was still good enough – that the assurance on the Monsanto website was legally binding.

Andrew Kimball, the lawyer working on behalf of the American ‘Center For Food Safety’ in 2013, said about the decision by the judge, that Monsanto’s website pledge not to sue farmers was sufficient:

Quote from Reuter’s article, address below:  “It is a very bizarre ruling that relies on a paragraph on a website,” he said. “It is a very real threat to American farmers. This is definitely appealable.”

Apart from the worry of being sued by Monsanto if a trace of their seed shows up in your paddock, there is also the worry that Monsanto’s genetically modified seed is becoming dominant, as it invades crops of traditional seeds.

Ethically, it would seem that Monsanto is also at fault because of its genetically-modified corn, cotton and soybean seeds which they have developed to be resistant to the glyphosphate-containing weedkiller, ‘RoundUp’.  These seeds are called ‘RoundUp Ready’.

The bad side effects of using RoundUp is well documented, and for Monsanto to continue its marketing ploys on this harmful glyphosphate, by creating seeds that will withstand the poison, is criminal in itself.

Glyphosphates are very bad for bees and other pollinating insects, and they are a bad thing to get into the food chain because they harm the health of people and animals alike. Some countries have banned the use of Glyphosphate-containing weedkillers such as ‘RoundUp’.  Mexico has already banned it, and Holland has just this year ruled it out at the beginning of 2015.
