Yoga Nidra Deep Relaxation

Technique For Deep Relaxation:

Yoga Nidra is a deep relaxation technique which the yoga teacher Satyananda has promoted widely in his teachings. It is extremely effective and is very easy to learn. The more you practice it, the better your breathing will become and the more oxygen your body will take in. It releases tensions in  both body and mind through the directing of the awareness in a disciplined way.

You will achieve peace of mind through the regular practice of Yoga Nidra.

It is effective, when done regularly, in changing patterns of behaviour, and in weeding out negative thought patterns from our minds. It is a very beneficial excercise, not only for those who are giving up smoking, but for all who want to improve health and gain peace of mind.

Yoga Nidra is an exercise which can help us achieve great things. It is an exercise which can inspire and influence  people around us because of the good we promote within ourselves. The practice of Yoga Nidra can help shape events in our lives which will benefit others as well as ourselves.

The following is my own adaptation of Yoga Nidra as taught by Satyananda. If you want, you can omit the visualization section, but I have found this to be most helpful especially when people are sick, lonely or grieving.

This exercise is  done with the eyes closed, but you can do it with these instructions in front of you until you get the hang of it. Even this will be helpful.

All you need is half an hour in a quiet space where you can remain undisturbed. Lie on the floor. You can cover the body with a light blanket.

This is ‘savasana’, or ‘dead man’s pose’. Put the arms alongside the body, slightly away from the trunk and thighs so that they do not touch the body. The palms are facing upward and the forefinger and thumb lightly touching. Legs are on the floor with the feet slightly apart from each other, not touching.

Close the eyes. Begin breathing slowly and evenly. Count the breaths and say OM to yourself as you breathe out. This must be silently spoken to yourself, as chanting or speaking while in a prone position is hurtful to the larynx.

Watch the tummy rising and falling with each breath. ‘One’ as you breathe in, ‘OM’ as you breath out. Feel your body relax totally as you breathe out. With each breath, the body is becoming more relaxed. Continue up to TEN.

Keep the even, regulated, deep breaths going. The tummy rising and falling.

Now, we are going to move through the body with our awareness. Don’t worry if you feel you can’t ‘get’ it or that you are out of touch with the parts of the body which we name. It doesn’t matter. You just carry on with the routine anyway and move onto the next body part.

Take your awareness to the right hand thumb—–forefinger—–middle finger—–fourth finger—–little finger—–palm—–back of the hand—–forearm——outer lower arm—–upper arm—–shoulder—–right arm pit—–right side of the chest—–right side of the stomach—–right hip—–right thigh—-knee—–shin—–calf muscle—–ankle—–top of the foot—–sole of the foot—–right big toe—–2nd toe—–3rd toe—–4th toe—–5th toe—–the whole of the right foot lying on the floor.

Keep the even breathing going. The tummy rising and falling. Feel the body becoming more relaxed on the floor.

Bring the attention to the left hand thumb—– forefinger—–middle finger—–4th finger—– little finger—–palm—–back of the hand—–wrist—–forearm—–outer lower arm—-upper left arm—–shoulder—–left side of the chest—–left side of the stomach—–left hip—-left thigh—–left knee—–shin—–calf muscle—–ankle—–top of the foot—–sole of the foot—–left big toe—–2nd toe——3rd toe——4th toe—–5th toe—–the left foot lying on the floor.

Be mindful of the breath. The tummy rising and falling as you keep breathing slowly and deeply. Totally relaxed.

Come back to the awareness of the feet on the floor. Bring the awareness up the backs of the legs, slowly as you continue your breathing, to the thighs, the bottom, the lower spine, on slowly up the spine until you reach the neck. Keep breathing deeply and slowly. Bring the awareness up the back of the head to the top of the skull, the forehead, the temples, the eyebrows, eyes, cheeks, nose, mouth, lips. Remember to keep a relaxed smile on the lips.

Repeat the whole exercise from the beginning – three times to this point. Now hold the awareness in the eyebrow centre. Watch this space for anything you might visualize here. Now leave the eyebrow centre. Move the awareness slowly around the body in a wide circle. Take your time. Just listen for sounds in the direction you have your awareness placed. No need to analyze these sounds. Simply hear, be aware, and move on your radar sensor further round. Listen for the sounds again. Keep this practice up for a few minutes.

Be aware of the breathing again. Nice, slow, even, energy filled breaths. Watch the tummy rising and falling with each breath.

Now visualize the moon coming up over the water. You are feeling totally at peace with yourself and the world. Watch the moon for a minute or two, rising up over the water.

Now you are walking through the garden of Paradise. Birds are singing. You can hear a stream nearby as you walk down a winding path which has all the plants in the world growing alongside and round about it. You can smell the beautiful fragrances from many different flowers As you walk along the path of the garden of Paradise, you can see a rock pool where a little waterfall is running gently down. You sit here for a moment and breathe in beautiful, cool, moist and fragrant air which heals and soothes you with each breath.

Higher up the path, you can see a Cathedral and hear Angelic voices singing. All the people you love, departed and living, are here, making their way with rejoicing up to the Cathedral. You can decide whether or not you want to continue further up to greet them.

Leave your friends and come back to the awareness of the body on the floor. Hear the birds outside. Move the awareness around radar-like again, but more quickly this time.

Move the awareness now to the throat. Keep breathing. Feel the throat relaxed. Move to the chest. Keep breathing. As you breathe, feel the chest relaxed and toxins and negative thoughts and feelings leaving the body. Come to the stomach. Breathe. Again, feel negative emotion leaving the body, and energy from your breath infusing the area. Move on down—–the hips—–the thighs—–the knees—–shins—–calf muscles—–ankles—–tops of the feet—–soles of the feet—–both feet lying on the floor.

Be aware of the legs on the floor, the trunk on the floor, the head on the floor. Continue to breathe.

The whole face is totally relaxed. You are smiling contentedly. Bring the awareness to the eyebrow centre. Feel at peace within this centre. Keep breathing evenly as you think of the thing which you would like to improve in yourself or within the world. Say a prayer for friends, family and the people in the world who have a need greater than our own. Pray, then, that we might get help with the changes we wish to make in our lives.

We might ask that all patterns of addictive behaviour will cease and that our waking moments be filled with creative, constructive, loving thoughts and actions which will benefit not just ourselves, but those around us.

Say your prayer three times. Give thanks for the blessings in our lives three times.

Prepare now to finish the yoga nidra practice. You can speed up the process of identification of body parts. Take the awareness to the whole  body on the floor, the head on the floor, the arms, the trunk, the legs, the feet on the floor. Bring the awareness up the back of the legs, calves, thighs, bottom, spine, head, back of the head, top of the head. Face, neck, arms, chest, stomach, hips, thighs, knees, shins, calves, ankles, tops of the feet, soles of the feet, ten toes.  Do this section three times.

Move the hands on the floor. Stretch the fingers. Move the head side to side. Move the arms, wriggle the toes, move the feet. Feel the whole body lying on the floor. You are leaving the yoga nidra state now.

Sit up with your eyes closed. Say OM aloud three times. Chant the sound in a relaxed, long breath. Your tone will be clear and strengthened by the yoga nidra practice. Open your eyes.

Thankyou. Yoga nidra is complete.

Prevent Cancer

CONSIDER THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS. – Keeping a clean environment, of course,  is extremely important. Toxic working and home environments should be avoided. The use of anything toxic  in the house, garden and work place  such as fly sprays, herbicides, fungicides and other chemicals should  never be used.

Merrilyn’s book on Amazon has more information on the subject of avoiding and treating cancer:

Many things which people use about the house and garden are used in good faith that they won’t hurt the user. Rat poison  is a good example. This is extremely toxic and contaminates the area in which it is laid even if it is not physically spread about. But rats and mice will spread it about anyway, which adds to the problem of contamination of food and clothing. This contamination is likely to upset the heart and blood pressure, apart from setting off other patterns of ill health.  People often leave rat poison lying about in a hidden place, just in case rats or mice enter the house, but this practice should not be continued. An example follows:

Recently, my son and I moved my gear, mainly boxes of books, records and music, out of storage where it has been now for several years. But since the items stored have been exposed to fumigation treatment and the laying of rat bait at the door of a previous storage unit, they were contaminated. Handling the boxes with bare hands caused absorption of these chemicals through the skin, which caused distressing reactions, including intense bone pain in the hands and up the arms, dizziness, vomitting and an ongoing painful headache. All the  food stored, even unopened cans of food, had to be thrown out.

Chemicals  which will deter insects for a long period, and rat poison, can  contaminate foods without touching them. This is because the vibration of the chemical is so strong that something of its aura changes the quality of the items nearby it. Everything in the vicinity is affected: foods, clothing, furnishings, your own body and that of your children and pets.

Imagine then, what effect a hidden pot of rat poison will be doing quietly to the health of you, your family, your pets, even if it is not opened.

For this reason,  no chemicals, household cleaners, even soaps, should ever be stored near food. Even cans of food will be affected by the storage of non-food items nearby. Affected foods, when eaten, can seriously undermine your health, because you are taking in the quality of the poison with it.

If rats and mice get into the poison, then there is an invisible trail of the stuff around on  the rat circuit inside the house. You and your poor bare-footed pet will be walking through this and spreading it around. Your pet will absorb poison straight through the skin on its paws.

Pet collars and sprays to deter fleas on cats and dogs are another hazard to the health of your pet, you and your family. The poor pet is likely to get cancer, or kidney failure, heart disease or arthritis because of the continual wearing of these collars. And every time you touch the collar, or the spot which has the flea deterent on it, you will be contaminating yourself and spreading the poison about to contaminate others. It gets into your food, and is absorbed through the skin of you and your pet.

If you must paint the house, or varnish floors, try to use a non-toxic product and you should still wear protective gear, including a mask. The family are best housed somewhere else if painting is being undertaken. Our health is already being tested by the numerous poisons in our environment – senseless to add anything to it which we can avoid or do without.

COSMETICS – These are best left alone. There are very few brands which don’t contain anything harmful such as petrochemicals, preservatives and colourings. Don’t be fooled just because the item says “With Vitamin E”, or “Aloe vera”, because, in most cases, a host of harmful chemicals  will also be added to the combination.  The “Weleda” brand, who also make homeopathic medecines, is one to be highly recommended. Their products are all made organically in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand,  and contain no petrochemicals or other harmful agents. I will post up any other reliable products on this site as they come to my attention.

NEVER USE HAIR DYE OR HAIR-SPRAY OR NAIL POLISH. These chemicals get stored in the liver, affect liver function, and lead to cancerous conditions, arthritis and other degenerative disease. Jacqui Davison who recovered from melanoma using Dr Gerson’s therapy, attributed her cancer mainly to the use of hair dye and nail polish.

ADEQUATE NUTRITION – The most important factor is ROUGHAGE. We need adequate fibre in our diets for our bowels to remain clean so that unhealthy organisms and toxins are not harboured there. Clean intestines also mean that you gain more nutrition from the food which you eat.This means that plenty of raw and cooked vegetables and fruits and whole grains such as brown rice should form the bulk of the diet. An adequate amount of protein, eggs, fish, nuts, pulses, should go with it. Meat eating should be moderate if it is eaten at all, and should not be eaten on a daily basis, as it putrifies in the bowel. So does cheese and  most other dairy products. This is why  vegetables, fruits and grains should form the bulk of the diet.

AVOID PROCESSED WHEAT FLOUR AND SUGAR. Use brown rice to replace bread eating. This has more fibre  and so is digested more cleanly. Brown rice is far  is more nutritious than wheat  flour. Even white rice has been used in the treatment of disease, but brown is preferable because of its higher nutritional value and higher fibre.

Use brown wheat flour if you must use flour, but try to minimise the intake of wheat.

It is best that our vitamin and mineral intake comes from the food we eat. But added vitamin and mineral supplements can aid immune function, prevent cancer and other degenerative disease, and enhance the quality and length of life. ANTIOXIDANTS, mainly Vitamins A, C and E are extremely important in counteracting “free radicals” and the effects of modern living. Vitamin E is reputed to be the king of the antioxidants, with Vitamin C next in line, and Vitamin A in 3rd place. These have been shown to be active in preventing cancer, and in reducing cancer growth.  Selenium, Zinc and Manganese are also important. Studies in Turkey have shown that a deficiency of zinc can lead to prostate cancer.

VITAMIN C – This is found in all vegetables and fruits, but much is destroyed with cooking. Raw fruits are the best way to get your vitamin C. All the berries, cranberries, blackberries, boysenberries, strawberries, raspberries, are especially high in Vitamin C.

Citrus fruits are very high, but not everybody can tolerate these – lemon juice in water is a good cleanser, rich in Vitamin C,  and is not usually problematic to people who can’t tolerate other citrus.

Grapes are a great  alkaline fruit to aid digestion and provide Vitamin C and iron. Most people can eat these in any amounts. The grape diet is an excellent one for cleansing the body of toxins. All you do is eat only grapes, as many and as often as you like, for one or several days. (Get some advice on this if you are on medication of any sort or have a heart condition)  Apples and stone fruits are all contain Vitamin C. Grated apple is another good cleanser. Pineapple, mango and paw paw are all good sources of Vitamin C.

Kiwifruit is extremely high in Vitamin C and is another excellent cleanser for the bowel. A meal taken entirely of Kiwifruit will cure an attack of constipation without any need to take a laxative. Eat a bulk of the fruit at one sitting every day until the problem is cured. This doesn’t usually take more than a day, but persist in the treatment if you don’t get results that soon.

Broccoli is high in fibre and still retains some of its Vitamin C after cooking. It is also high in iron and has been shown to help prevent cancer.

All the above fruits and vegetables, eaten plentifully and on a daily basis, will provide you with enough ROUGHAGE  and Vitamin C to help you prevent cancer and other disease.

CALCIUM ASCORBATE POWDER can be used as an extra antioxidant. 500mg twice daily is recommended by some practitioners. But 1000mg twice a day is the dose I used when treating myself for severe chemical and metal poisoning. I used this amount also when I was treating myself for a breast lump, along with a diet of predominantly raw food and the Gerson enema treatment. However, if you are healthy and are eating plenty of the above fruits and vegetables, you should not really need to take extra Vitamin C unless you are detoxifying or have some illness.

EXERCISE and ENJOYMENT of life are important factors in avoiding cancer. Dwelling on unhappy thoughts are very bad for the health, as we all know. Make the effort to do nice things with the family and friends. Appreciate the people who love you.

Giving Up Smoking

Why You Should  Quit Smoking: Of course smoking is very bad for the health. You might get less colds and flu and enjoy a socially more active life while you are a smoker, but giving up smoking will give you benefits to your health which will far outweigh any positives for remaining a smoker. For a start, your life-span will surely be extended.

Smoking damages your eyesight. All that smoke drifting up past the delicate eye membranes actually causes damage to the nerves and the lens of the eye. The sinuses and ears are affected, and you lose your sense of smell.

Chronic Lung Disease results from long term smoking.  Apart from the obvious  damage to the lungs, the heart is affected, your veins get clogged, your blood pressure rises, you run the risk of getting arthritis if you do not already have it, and you are more likely to get cancer anywhere in the body than people who don’t smoke. If you smoke and also work in a toxic environment or use  herbicides and pesticides, then you are more at risk of getting lung cancer, emphysema,  melanoma, heart disease or some other degenerative disease than are non-smokers.

But giving up smoking can be so, so, difficult. Here are some suggestions which might be helpful in getting you on your way to recovery from smoking.

First, you need to change your mindset. Breathing exercises and meditation can help with this. Alternate Nostril Breathing is very good for people giving up smoking. This exercise, while being relaxing, oxygenates the blood and helps clear the lungs of toxins. Deep relaxation exercise such as Yoga Nidra is very good for the general physical and mental health, but also gives you the opportunity to visualize the  improvements and changes you wish to make in your life while you are in a deeply relaxed state of mind. Regular, daily practice of yoga nidra where you state your affirmations to yourself, will really help you in giving up smoking. Other types of meditation are also helpful, as is regular prayer.

The best thing is to give up drinking alcohol at the same time, or even before, you plan on giving up smoking. The two go together like a horse and cart. If you continue to drink, you will always feel there is something missing each time you have that glass of wine or that beer. But the other reason is that all alcohol is acid-forming and an acid body makes it very hard to give up smoking. This can be a good part of the reason we become addicted to alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. Changing the diet to an alkaline one, which includes most fruit and vegetables, is very helpful.

People with hypoglycaemia, that is, fluctuating blood sugar levels, might  find it difficult to give up alcohol and smoking. A diet devoid of sugar, wheat  and yeast products including bread, and dairy products is important in the case of people with low blood sugar levels. Yeast foods are problematic and are best left out of the diet as they contribute to people getting candida. Yeast foods include all alcohol, vinegar, tomato sauce, soya sauce and bread.

Brown rice should be substituted for bread. Rice  is absorbed as sugar more slowly into the bloodstream which means that the blood sugar remains more constant. This is favourable to your health and your emotional state, as you will not feel so tired, depressed or inclined to take a cigarette. Another point in favour of substituting rice for bread, and other wheat-based foods like pasta, is that rice, especially brown rice, is less likely than wheat to make you fat.

Eat plenty of green vegetables, root vegetables, fresh fruit, nuts, eggs , fish,whole grains like buckwheat and rice, and meats in moderate amounts. Eat at regular meal-times. Snack on nuts, almonds and a little dried fruit, or fresh fruit, raw carrots and celery during the day. Almonds are a good quality protein: half a dozen a day is a good amount to begin with, then you can increase the amount to about ten.  The combination of nuts and fresh and dried fruits, carrots and celery, can be eaten whenever you have a craving for a cigarette and will not cause you to put on weight, so long as you are avoiding sugars, wheat and dairy products. Eating nuts and fruits etc during the day will help you prevent low-blood sugar  which will help you in giving up smoking.

A diet insufficient in the essential vitamins and minerals can also make us less inclined to give up smoking. Insufficient intake of the essentials can leave us with a semi-permanent state of depression which alcohol and cigarettes – and coffee – temporarily relieve.

A booster of B complex vitamins is important to help with general health and improve your stress levels. Take the stated dose. Niacin is very good, but you do need to talk to a health professional about this one, as it can cause a sudden but temporary  rise in temperature  in some people. If you are able to take it, then it is very good for flushing toxins out of the brain: this effect also helps counteract depression and helps with memory loss.

1000mg of vitamin C morning and night is a good and safe detoxifyer as well as a mild sedative which will help counteract the desire for tobacco. If you do not have candida infection, then standard Vitamin C is fine, but calcium ascorbate is the best form to take, because it is alkaline.

Zinc, magnesium and selenium in moderate doses, all help to counteract stress, depression and the desire for a cigarette.

NOTE: Talk to your health professional to make sure these supplements are not conflicting with any other medication you may be on before you add these to your anti-smoking regime.

Richard Webster has devoted many years to helping people with behavioural problems, including people’s addiction to smoking. He published a booklet which accompanied some tapes  called ‘Ezi-Stop’. This was published by Prestige Marketing 1995.

Richard recommends baking soda to keep the body alkaline. You can brush your teeth with it: a small amount is absorbed through the tissues of the mouth and into the bloodstream. This helps the body towards sustaining an alkaline p h level. Richard recommends putting a dab of baking soda  onto the tongue whenever you have a craving for a cigarette. This helps negate the craving for nicotine.

NOTE: Richard also warns that baking soda should not be used by people who have high blood pressure or who are on low sodium diets. Baking soda is a salt and should not be used in these cases.

So, you are about to give up smoking, maybe for the umpteenth time. Richard recommends signing a contract with yourself- you agree with yourself, that on a certain day, at a certain time, you will throw the rest of the cigarettes away and become a non-smoker.
Make a list of all the benefits to your health and your budget.
Make a plan of what you will eat for breakfast, lunch and tea. Do not leave anything to chance, as you really need to take care of your blood sugar levels and make sure they do not fluctuate. Ensure that you have enough protein included in the diet and eat plenty of cooked greens, raw and cooked fruits, nuts and brown rice.
Eat at REGULAR times of the day – proper meals – sit down to eat, give thanks for the food and give thanks for being a non-smoker.
Eat your healthy snacks between meals -nuts, dried and fresh fruit and vegetables. DO NOT eat any sugar, wheat or dairy-food (butter is usually ok)during this period. It is best to cut these foods out for good. In my experience, it is when my health recovered after following such a diet for many years, that I relaxed my rules and let these problematic foods into my diet because I thought I was “cured” – not so – this caused a drastic decline in my health and I became addicted to alcohol and cigarettes. These days, I am following the old rules again – no sugar, bread, dairy products, except for butter.Consequently, my health is great, and praise God – I am neither a smoker or a drinker.
COFFEE – beware of drinking too much coffee, especially while you are giving up alcohol and cigarettes. Coffee is also addictive. Drinking too much coffee will dehydrate you and deplete your body of the much needed vitamin B and other vitamins and minerals which help you cope with stress. Excess coffee will give you bad skin as well as weaken your kidneys. Dehydration will make you inclined to drink alcohol and to smoke, both of which compound  dehydration of the body tissues

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER while you are giving up smoking. Herb teas and green teas help with detoxifying, and make a pleasant and refreshing change to coffee and tea. Ceylon tea is an antioxidant and is good for the health in moderate amounts – but try to avoid putting milk into the tea. Milk in tea and coffee is possibly the most toxic way we take milk, as the milk solids are rendered indigestible by tannin. Tea with milk puts a strain on the liver because the livercannot process the plastic-like protein which results. Toxins then form in the intestine and are absosrbed into the bloodstream. The poor old  liver then has to try  to remove them.. This  condition of perpetual poisoning can give us addictions to alcohol and cigarettes because these things temporarily disguise the symptoms of stress originating from the liver.

Remember your affirmations, your agreement to yourself and your YOGA NIDRA practice. Eat well. Sleep well.
Good wishes for your giving up smoking – don’t be discouraged if you “fall off the wagon” – simply start again being a non-smoker. Think of how great you are going to feel being a non-smoker. Think of the benefits to your life which you are already beginning to experience. Cut down – cut down – cut out.

Hair Dyes And Nail Polish Linked To Cancer

Toxic Chemicals in Cosmetics Can Cause Cancer:

Hair dyes are extremely bad for you. Many hair dyes contain harmful chemicals which are known to be carcenogenic.

Apart from making the hair fall out over time, and hair growth to diminish, hair dye can contribute to states of cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, parkinson’s  and other degenerative disease. Jacqui Davison, who recovered from melanoma using diet and purgatives, confirms that hair dye and nail polish contributed to her cancerous condition. The origin of the cancer was found to come from under a toenail which she had always kept painted with nail polish. If you have cancer, then hair dye and nail polish should be  the first chemical pollutants to be struck off the list, and cleansing should begin immediately.

Nail polish is also very bad for you, because, like hair dye, the chemicals are absorbed through the body tissues, skin and nails, into the blood stream. Even when the polish has dried, formaldehyde and other chemicals continue to be absorbed through the nail tissue. These chemicals then collect in the liver where they remain stored unless you regularly cleanse the liver by either fasting, using enemas, eating raw foods, or taking some purgative like castor oil, which helps eliminate these toxins from the body.

The build-up in the liver for most people  might include  a mix of hair dye, nail polish chemicals, make-up chemicals, food additives, household cleansers, fly spray, garden chemicals, and  agricultural pesticides and herbicides. This is surely a dangerous situation for the health.

Hair dye, because of its colour,  can be easily detected in the bowel motions when it is expelled through the use of a purgative and fasting. Jacqui Davison and others confirm that hair dye was expelled in the first few weeks of cleansing after using castor oil to detoxify. Jacqui, who had been given only days to live before she began the Gerson approach to recovery, says in her book that she had used hair dye for years, as well as nail polish. She was horrified to see just how much had been stored in her liver.

The liver suffers with the use of commercial hair dyes, but so do the eyes and the sinuses. Even in the weeks following dye treatment, fumes from the dye are emitted which affect these organs. Vision can be impaired by the regular use of hair dyes.

If you want to prevent cancer, or are treating it or another degenerative disease like arthritis, then you will stop using hair dye and nail polish forever and begin ridding the body of its accumulated toxins.

N.B. – HENNA is SAFE to use.

Henna powder, which is derived from a plant, is NOT toxic and is the only hair dye which you can safely use, in my opinion. You must be sure to get the raw henna powder with no additives. There are some products which have chemicals as well as natural henna, or other natural hair dye added, but these products should be avoided, as very often the added chemicals pose a danger to your health.  Powdered, natural henna is safe.

Ridding the Body of Cancer

You Can Reverse Cancer:  Ideally, cancer prevention is what we should all be mindful of. But if you already have cancer, you might be exploring the alternatives to allopathic treatment.

Alternative cancer treatments are not just the domain of naturopaths, acupuncturists and homeopaths etc. Many conventional doctors have devoted their life-times to treating people by natural means.  In New Zealand, Dr Eva Hill pioneered natural remedies and cures  in  the early 19th century: Walter Last, more recently, helped many people in Whangarei. Dr Ann Wigmore, an American, contracted cancer, cured herself of it, then proceeded to treat other people using the methods she had proved successful. She set up a clinic in Australia after establishing her clinic in U.S.A.  Dr Max Gerson was another famous doctor who researched alternative cancer therapies: his clinic in Mexico still treats hundreds of people every year.These people have helped and cured many people of cancer and other degenerative disease. Their documentation which records their methods and their successes are extremely useful resources as proof that natural cures are possible.

Jacqui Davison, bedridden and  given only days to live after following conventional treatment, was encouraged by her daughter, who had just read Max Gerson’s book on treating people with cancer and other degenerative disease, to start detoxifying.  And so she immediately began taking castor oil every second day, using enemas  daily, and drinking juices, not because she really believed it would work, but because there was nothing to lose, and her daughter was adamant that she try. She lived not only to tell the tale, but to write a book about how she, with the help of  her daughter, had tackled the disease. I found her book to be enormously encouraging. Because it was an account of a lay person’s own  experience, it was very down-to-earth: a step-by-step account of her progress and the methods she used to beat the melanoma.

This article will endeavour to give a guide as to some possible alternative treatments you might consider. Examples will be drawn from my own experience, and from the teachings of the above doctors, and other therapists and teachers such as Jacqui Davison. You  then are best advised to discuss them with your health practitioner.

Years ago I became frightened by a lump in the breast. My health was run down. Emotionally, I hadn’t recovered from the loss of a child about five years earlier. Prior to this very sad event, my young son and I, and my unborn baby, had been aerial sprayed via helicopter with “2,4,5,T”, known as  “agent orange” in Viet-Nam, at our Hokianga home.  “2,4,5,T” was used frequently in New Zealand in the 1970’s as a defoliant, in this case, to rid the hillside of the blackberry which was prolific there. We were very ill after the spraying. Our  drinking water came from the stream which ran across our property, and so poisoning was thus intensified. It is probable that traces of this chemical were still in my body which lead to the development of a lump in the breast a few years later.

I was advised by a doctor to have a biopsy, and that I needed to take it seriously for the sake of my other children. I was grateful to this doctor, as he inspired me to do just that – take it seriously – without a biopsy. The warning was enough for me to change my life-style almost immediately.

I already knew that in some cases, putting the knife in can make things worse, and anyway, I really didn’t like the idea of having a breast off. So I armed myself with the available  literature  of the above authors’ works and began avidly reading.

Dr Ann Wigmore had been sure she had cancer of the breast, as she had seen enough cases of it to identify it when it occurred in her own body.  She changed her life-style and her diet immediately and went to live in the country  in a tent for a while, where she could breathe fresh air and meditate undisturbed. After six months her wheat-grass juice, raw foods and detoxification had brought about a recovery. But her medical colleagues said it couldn’t have been cancer if she had recovered without radiation and chemotherapy, or having it surgically removed. So she agreed to a biopsy to prove her point. The biopsy proved positive for cancer, but the opening of the area caused the cancer to start growing again. So she went back onto her cleansing diet and followed her chosen therapeutic techniques. This time the cancer was more vigilant, and it took her two long years before she had fully recovered.

If you have cancer or some other life-threatening disease, then you need to act promptly. Since a build-up of toxins accompanies the cancerous condition, it is imperative that you start a rapid detoxification programme right away. Personally, I think that even if you have opted for conventional treatment, detoxifying is important if you do not want the cancer to return. Of course, it is essential to combine the cleansing process with a diet rich in organic raw fruits and vegetable and their juices.

Dr Max Gerson believed that if you did not follow his dietary and cleansing regime to the letter, then it was a waste of time trying to cure yourself  naturally if you simply were to choose the elements of the programme which suit. His recipe was tried and true.

Consistency is extremely important whatever regime you choose. If you were to lapse once and, say, eat a plate of macaroni cheese or a slice of chocolate cake following your big salad and juice, then you would be negating the effects of the cleansing, nourishing food by putting clogging food that will feed the cancer into your bowel. This makes more toxins to clear out of the bowel. Even one instance like this can halt the healing of cancer and other disease. Done once, like smoking, it will be difficult not to partake again. This is why Dr Gerson was adamant you stick to his regime without any deviation.  However, there are many different techniques for treating cancer and other degenerative diseases, including conventional allopathic treatments and macrobiotic diets. A combination of treatments can work, but you must be consistent in following your chosen combination of therapies.  The main thing is to avoid forbidden foods completely. These are generally dairy foods, sugar, wheat and cooked food if you follow the recommendations of Eva Hill, Walter Last and Dr Gerson.  Detoxifying must continue, whatever diet you choose, with excellent nourishment taken in the form of non-mucous forming foods.

Each case is different, and each person capable of just so much determined effort. Sometimes our family support systems break down, or we get old and tired and cannot summon up the effort required to sustain a long period following a demanding dietary and detoxification programme. Our circumstances might restrict us as to the availability of organic food, expensive vitamins, and a  life devoid of stress.

But whatever the limitations, and whatever therapy you decide on, essentially, detoxification and maximum nourishment are  the keys to success. The two main elements of Dr Max Gerson’s treatment, apart from the diet of mainly raw foods and juices every hour, were the two detoxifyers – enemas and castor oil.

CASTOR OIL AND ENEMAS: Dr Gerson found castor oil to be the most excellent purgative and healing agent. I used this treatment to rid myself of the breast lump. Two tablespoons are taken  every second morning followed by a cup of black coffee. This has an immediate effect on the liver and gall bladder, exciting these organs to expel toxins stored there. Castor oil has the ability to attract poisons and carry them off, so it is very powerful in helping to cure cancer.

This is only HALF the treatment for expelling toxins rapidly from the body. Dr Gerson found that, initially, his most fragile patients would seem better after the castor oil. But after the third day, they grew worse. He figured out that this had to be because the toxins expelled by the liver were not being carried away fast enough by the bowel, but were being reabsorbed into the blood stream which caused auto-intoxication. This was dangerous, as a life-time of stored toxins were being released suddenly and then being taken into the bloodstream via the walls of the intestine.

One thing for it – ENEMAS. He began using enemas within five hours after the castor oil was taken, and then again several times later in the day. He found his success rate of survivors, many of whom were on death row, increased dramatically after he introduced regular enemas into the routine.

Most people, especially men, are extremely reluctant to put an enema tube into the “you know what”. The fact is, if you have a terminal illness, then you cannot be so proud. Washing the bowel out in order to rid the body quickly of those killer toxins is IMPERATIVE for your SURVIVAL. The more advanced the cancer, the more rigorous the methods needed to stop the cancer in its progress.

Dr Gerson used coffee enemas as well as water enemas. Coffee, taken through the rectum, caused the liver and gall bladder to release poisons quickly, intensifying the effect of the castor oil.
Coffee enemas have the effect of reducing pain, which is helpful in treating cancer and other conditions like arthritis.

I used coffee enemas perhaps once or twice a day as part of my detoxification programme. I have experimented in recent years with coffee enemas to clear the liver, but I find the caffeine gets absorbed into the blood stream which is not desirable at all. This might be because I have weak-walled intestines, and/or it might also be because I have become a coffee drinker in recent years. When you are on this detoxifaction programme, you must NOT drink coffee at all – only once every second day after that dose of castor oil. This really puts you off drinking coffee for pleasure while you are “taking the cure”.

NOTE: The regular washing of the bowel as in the Gerson treatment should not be done unless you have a serious illness. Then you will be taking castor oil as recommended, and following a diet in optimum nourishment. If you were to take frequent enemas and doses of castor oil without replenishing your vitamin-mineral intake through copious amounts of raw juices and foods, and supplements,then you will become severly depleted, as the “good” vitamins and minerals get washed out along with the toxins.

Vitamin C has been used by many to diminish cancer growth and help arthritic and other degenerative conditions. Ian Gawler who wrote ‘You Can Conquer Cancer’ (Hill of Content Publishing, Melbourne, 1984) reports that he has successfully used Vitamin C in the treatment of cats which had confirmed cases of lymphosarcoma. Four out of five cases went into total remission after being given intravenous doses of Vitamin C. He used 1 gram per kilogram of body weight, five days in a row.His treatment of dogs, using the same method, was not so successful.
