VITAMIN F
Vitamin F helps to control the metabolic rate. It also helps to control cholesterol.
It aids the skin, helps to prevent eczema and acne, and helps prevent dandruff.
It helps hair to remain healthy because it assists in the production of oil in the sebaceous glands.
Vegetable oils (see Vitamin E), oily fish such as tuna, salmon and eel, brown rice, wheatgerm, avocado, almonds,
and most nuts contain Vitamin F.

Vitamin K
This is essential to help the blood clot normally. It is found in green leafy vegetables, the brassica family which
include cabbage, brussels sprouts and broccoli, alfalfa, carrot tops, soya bean oil and cod liver oil.

Vitamin P, or RUTIN – ok
This is important for the health of the eyes and for preventing infection.
It helps the heart and blood vessels to move the blood efficiently.
It is found in buckwheat and in the whole pulp of citrus fruits. Try to eat some of the white flesh just under the
skin of citrus fruits. This is high in Rutin and Vitamin C and K.

Leek and Ginger Soup- ok
Saute three chopped leeks in two tablespoons of olive oil. Add one tablespoon of freshly grated ginger, or one
tablespoonful of ginger paste, one teaspoon of cumin powder, one teaspoon of sea salt, four cloves of chopped garlic,
and one litre of water.
Simmer gently for half an hour.
This is a very good soup to prevent colds and flu, or to assist a cure from these ailments.
For a dinner party, if tolerated, 50 mls of cream can be added just before serving.

Natural Health

For your pet’s rheumatism
5 drops chamomile oil, 5 drops of ginger, 2 drops of rosemary in 50 ml of olive oil. Massage well in.

For skin problems
10 ml evening primrose oil – 5 drops lavender oil – 5 drops chamomile oil – 30 ml olive oil – for rashes, eczema etc.

Merrilyn’s recipe for bite lotion – Soak one cup of dried rosemary in olive oil for three weeks. Strain. Add half a cup of vodka. Store in air tight jar.  I used fresh rosemary initially, soaked in olive oil, and did not use any alcohol. aThe mixture was allowed to infuse in the sun for three weeks before draining off. Because no alcohol was used, the mixture had to be kept in the fridge. This worked extremely well for insect bites, especially for sand fly and sea lice bites which attacked the whole family one season at the beach on Waiheke Island.

Borage – next best thing to comfrey. If comfrey is not available, then borage can be used as a tea to rinse the hair
with. It is very high in silica.
Drinking borage tea also helps the growth of hair, nails, teeth and bones.
The flowers are an especially potent part of the
plant, with a high content of silicic acid which helps line mucous membranes.
The pulped, lightly cooked leaves will help varicose veins when used as a poultice. They can also be used to treat
burns.
Borage helps the function of liver, kidneys, uterus, lungs, stomach and bowels. It is good for treating sore veins.

Ointment of a chosen herb can be made by using 100 ml of glycerine. Use two tablespoons of the herb or half a cup of
fresh leaves. Put in heatproof bowl with lid on and steam for half an hour. Strain and bottle.

a cologne can be made by using vodka as the base. one litre vodka to two cups lemon balm leaves. Leave for two weeks.
Add 500 ml distilled water, 70 drops of lime oil and 150 drops of lemon oil. Leave two more weeks and strain.

Breathing smoke second hand puts you at a higher risk of heart disease: tobacco smoke causes the fibrinogen, which we
need to clot the blood, to increase dramatically inthe blood. This leads to congested arteries and veins, which puts
your heart at risk.

Companion Planting
Grow borage with strawberries
dill with corn and celery
parsley with roses
asparagus with tomatoes
basil with tomatoes
peas with corn, radishes, beans, cucumber and carrots
lettuce with carrots
Don’t put garlic and onions near beans and peas, or tomatoes and pumpkins near potatoes.

Vegetable spray – x
This spray will kill bees, so the use of it must be prudent to protect the bees. Avoid spraying on or near flowers
where bees work.
In a blender put half a cup of chopped garlic, 4 hot chillis, one cup of soap flakes and one litre of warm water.

Kelp fertilizer – x
This works to nourish your soil, and healthy soil helps keep your garden free of pests.
It can also be used as a spray on the leaves of plants, which helps to discourage insects. This does not harm bees,
although it is still a good idea to spray your plants with kelp solution after sundown, when the bees have gone to bed.
Simply put your kelp, or other seaweed, into a bucket. Half fill a bucket with seaweed. Fill with
water and leave for three weeks, stirring every day if you remember. Use one part of the mixture to three parts of
water for fertilizer. Use one part of the mixture to four parts water if you are using it for an insect repellant.

Comfrey fertilizer can be made the same way – leave for two or three months before draining off and using.
Couch grass is another wonderful fertilizer – make the same way as comfrey.
Blend together.
Dilute, one part to ten of water. Spray in the late afternoon when all bee activity has ceased.

Cough Mixture – x
Cut up 500 gms of onions, skin and all. Put in saucepan and add two litres of water and half a kilo of brown sugar.
Simmer slowly for three hours. Strain. Then add a kilo of honey. Simmer another hour. Bottle.

Body or Hair Lotion x
This lotion helps deter lice and encourages hair growth. It is also refreshing to use after a shower as a skin tonic.
6 tbsp chopped angelica leaves and stalks
6 tbsp lemon balm leaves
2 tbsps chopped rosemary
15 g coriander seeds, crushed
1 grated nutmeg
2 tbsp cloves
2 sticks of cinnamon

Carotene Rich Soup
Cook two large carrots in two cups of water. Add one cupful of cold water to cool once cooked. Blend to a smooth pulp.
Return to the saucepan. Add two tablespoons of real butter, one teaspoon of sea salt, two teaspoons of cumin powder,
quarter a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and half a teaspoon of cinnamon. Warm thoroughly, until the butter has melted
and fused with the spices. Add one tablespoon of finely chopped parsley just before serving.
The butter in this recipe helps to maximise the Vitamin A content available for absorption by the body.
It is simply delicious.
